NPCT1 Officially Launches Operations of Seven Electric Prime Movers, Strengthening Commitment to Sustainable Container Terminal Operations

February, 3rd 2026

Jakarta, 20 January 2026
New Priok Container Terminal One (NPCT1) has officially launched the deployment of 7 Electric Prime Movers (ePMs), in-terminal trucks used to transport containers within the terminal, including movements between the container yard and the wharf. Provided by SANY Marine Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., the e-PMs replaced 7 of NPCT1's existing fleet of 51 conventional prime movers and mark a significant milestone in the terminal sustainability journey as well as a major advancement for Indonesia's port industry.

The initiative underscores NPCT1's strong commitment to advancing cleaner, safer, and more efficient terminal operations, while supporting its long-term target to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.

President Director of NPCT1, Takayuki Hori, gave an opening speech, emphasized the strategic importance of this deployment for the container terminal industry. "NPCT1 is the first terminal in Jakarta to introduce e-PMs, this landmark project will set a new green standard for Indonesia."

Commercial Director of Pelindo, Drajat Sulistyo, highlighted the implementation of Pelindo's first e-PMs at NPCT1 as a significant milestone. The initiative is fully aligned with Pelindo's ongoing strategic transformation toward developing smart and green ports. "This demonstrates our courage to innovate and our readiness to lead the change. We strongly believe this initiative will set a benchmark and create efficiencies that can be replicated across other terminals in the future," he added.

He also appreciated NPCT1's achievement in handling more than 1.5 million TEUs in 2025, amid dynamic market conditions, operational complexity, and rising customer expectations. He further acknowledged the improvements in traffic flow, yard management, and overall terminal organization, which have directly contributed to higher productivity, improved service levels, and enhanced customer satisfaction.

Representing the foreign shareholder of NPCT1, Senior Executive Managing Officer of Mitsui & Co., Ltd, Tetsuya Daikoku, congratulated NPCT1 on pioneering environmental sustainability and the e-PM technology in Indonesia's port industry as it marks its 10th anniversary this year. He expressed his deepest gratitude and thanked all stakeholders supporting NPCT1 as it would not be achieved without their support.

Director of SANY Indonesia, Li Dao gave comment that SANY is honored to provide the e-PMs for NPCT1 and fully support NPCT1 in building a green and efficient smart port, jointly promoting the low-carbon transformation of port operations.

Reduce carbon emissions and enhance safety while lowering operation and maintenance costs

The transition from diesel-powered equipment to ePMs at NPCT1 represents a deliberate strategic move to enhance environmental sustainability and operational standards. By phasing out conventional diesel units, NPCT1 aims to significantly reduce emissions, fuel consumption, noise, and heat exposure across the terminal.

To meet the rigorous demands of terminal operations, the units feature high-endurance batteries capable of lashing through long operations, supported by fast-charging infrastructure that facilitates quick turnaround times.

Equipped with state-of-the-art safety telematics system, each ePM provides real-time monitoring for unsafe driving dynamics such as drowsiness and distractions. These systems work alongside a 360-degree camera visibility that enhances situational awareness and improves overall terminal safety.

Looking ahead, NPCT1 reaffirmed its commitment to advance sustainability initiatives through the adoption of green technologies while maintaining operational excellence to support Indonesia's trade and logistics ecosystem.
